On November 24, 1990, 19-year-old Hector D. Morales Jr. was shot and killed by Boston Police officers near the intersection of Washington Street and School Street in Egleston Square which borders the  Jamaica Plain and Roxbury, Neighborhoods.

Police report Morales fired a shotgun loaded with birdshot at plainclothes cops near the corner of Washington and School and returned returned fire, mortally wounding Morales.

Morales was part of the X-Men crew, a Egleston Square based crew that produced the original now historic and redone “Latino Power” mural on the side of the Egleston YMCA.

Hector’s death was seen by many in the community as a tragic escalation of targeted enforcement and harassment of the group by officers of E-13 (Jamaica Plain District) of the Boston Police. Following his death there was a significant outcry from the community for an independent investigation and intervention on behalf of then Mayor Raymond Flynn.
